Stories with Stash at S. Walter Stewart Library, Toronto

This week, Stash trotted into the S. Walter Stewart Library for a very special morning of reading and creativity. Families gathered to meet Toronto’s smallest therapy horse during a heartwarming event celebrating the joy of books.

The morning began with librarian Melanie, who welcomed everyone to the library’s beautiful circular reading room and read aloud from “Stash! Little Horse Big City.” The children listened intently to the true story of a tiny therapy horse who spreads kindness and calm across Toronto… the very same Stash who stood right before them, his blue vest gleaming in the sunlight.

After storytime, Melanie led the group through a fun craft activity where kids got to make their own Stash creations. Using paper cutouts, markers, and lots of imagination, they designed miniature ponies with colorful saddles, bows, and even unicorn horns. Some even gave their paper Stash a skateboard! The room was filled with laughter and creativity as children proudly shared their finished crafts with one another and with Stash, who curiously leaned in to inspect their handiwork.

The event continued with a selection of other books about horses, from classic tales to picture books about friendship and courage. Then came everyone’s favorite part — the meet and greet. One by one, children approached Stash for gentle pats, hugs, and photos. His calm demeanor and soft coat made him an instant favorite, while parents and library visitors couldn’t help but smile at the sight of a miniature horse among the bookshelves.

By the end of the morning, the library and “Stories with Stash” event reminded everyone that reading can bring stories to life in the most magical ways, especially when the story’s main character walks right into the room.
